Monica Brettle wins Women's Minors
/Monica Brettle has won the 2019 State Women’s “Minor” Snooker Champion at Club Toukley RSL, defeating Joey Tohme 2-0 over the weekend of 15-16 June.
Monica, a semi finalist in the previous two years of this event, put in a strong performance all weekend topping her round robin group. Monica defeated new-comer & local Daya (Donna) Blenman 2-0 in the quarters, followed by a close 2-1 win over Lee Castledine in the semis (the only frame Monica lost all weekend). Monica maintained her composure in the final to take out the championship.
First-timer Joey, an accomplished pool player, was also impressive all weekend, winning all of her round robin games. Joey defeated another first-timer, Lisa Bulmer 2-0 in the quarters, and then had a tough 2-0 win over local Kerrie Spindler in the semi. Joey also recorded the highest break (25). We look forward to seeing more of Joey at snooker events in the future!
It was encouraging to see several new players this year, all with such great enthusiasm and determination! With the assistance of current players and supporters, it remains the aim of Snooker & Billiards NSW to continually seek and encourage increased participation in women’s snooker
The Women’s “Minor” Snooker Championship is a traditional stepping stone for women to become more involved in the game at a tournament level. With support and encouragement to try the ‘Minor’ format they soon see it can be a fun experience and not as daunting as first thought. This was the case once again this year with all players enjoying themselves and the event continuing to prove popular with spectators over the two days of competition.
Many thanks to all concerned at Club Toukley RSL. The club has been a long-time supporter of our sport at all levels, in particular the Women’s game. Special thanks also to the Toukley RSL Billiards & Snooker Club committee, in particular Daya & Karma, and referee Alan Fletcher for all their assistance during the event.
