  • A welcoming, inclusive club is key to the future of snooker and billiards in NSW. Clubs that actively create safe, supportive spaces for women, juniors, people with disability, LGBTQI+ individuals, and others from under-represented groups don’t just do the right thing — they also grow stronger, more vibrant communities.

So how can your club take real steps to improve inclusivity? Here’s a practical guide based on best practices from Sport NSW, Play by the Rules, and SBNSW’s own Participation and Equity strategies.

    1. Start with Inclusive Leadership

Your committee sets the tone. SBNSW encourages clubs to:

    • Commit to gender equity and inclusion at board/committee level.

    • Include diverse voices in decision-making.

    • Review governance practices through a lens of equity.

    2. Make Your Club Welcoming for All

    Inclusivity begins with the basics:

    • Use inclusive, respectful language across your communications.

    • Show diverse representation in images and promotional materials.

    • Clearly state your club's values around fairness, safety, and inclusion.

    3. Understand the Barriers — and Remove Them

From venue access to club culture, under-represented groups face real barriers. SBNSW’s Equitable Acces & Usage Policy highlights that:

    • Most venues are not currently designed with accessibility in mind.

    • Participation by women and juniors remains low without targeted support.

    • LGBTQI+ participants may feel excluded or unseen without active outreach.

    Clubs can address this by:

    • Auditing physical access (ramps, lighting, bathrooms).

    • Offering flexible formats like shorter games or social comps.

    • Making dress codes, rules, and expectations clear and fair to all.

    4. Involve and Empower Juniors

Juniors aren’t just the future — they’re part of the now. Give young players a voice in shaping club activities:

    • Ask for their feedback regularly.

    • Involve them in leadership through youth reps or mentoring programs.

    • Create safe, child-friendly spaces and follow child safe sport guidelines.

    5. Support Participation for People with Disability

SBNSW’s Accessibility Strategy commits to growing disability snooker through pilot programs, venue partnerships, and “Come and Try” days. Clubs can support by:

    • Hosting or supporting inclusive events.

    • Ensuring online content follows accessibility standards.

    • Connecting with local disability service providers for co-promotion.

    6. Promote and Celebrate Diversity

Inclusivity thrives in environments where everyone is seen and valued. Clubs can:

    • Share stories and achievements of diverse members through newsletters or social media.

    • Actively recruit female, LGBTQI+, and disabled players, administrators, coaches and referees.

    7. Keep Learning — and Lead by Example

Clubs can stay on track by:

Your Club’s Role in a Stronger Snooker & Billiards Community

Inclusivity doesn’t happen by accident — it takes commitment and care. But when clubs lead the way, the benefits are clear: stronger communities, deeper member engagement, and a sport that’s truly open to everyone.
