NSW Referees Update

The declining number of certified Referees (particularly in Sydney) has long been a worrying trend for our Sport.  But whilst rectifying this issue remains a priority for SBNSW, there is no “quick fix” solution available, and it will be an ongoing process.

But we do have some pleasing news to report to members on this subject….

Despite setbacks associated with NSW’s severe Covid-19 restrictions over the past 2-3 years, the Referees’ subcommittee has continued to focus on taking steps to improve this predicament.  Strategies were devised and early results have been promising over the past 18 months of the post-Covid period.

Working closely with the SBNSW Board has seen various refereeing initiatives implemented.  This process has included the development and documenting of a comprehensive training program, in addition to updating the Referee Development page on the SBNSW website – which now includes an on-line option for members to receive more information by completing an ‘Expression of Interest to Become a Referee’.

Initial response has been very positive to date, with three separate workshops/clinics being successfully conducted utilising this new training program – at Blacktown Workers in June 2021, Hornsby RSL in May-June 2022, and Ramsgate RSL in November-December 2022.  A total of 17 candidates have attended this training with each providing very positive feedback on the overall format and program content.  Results are summarised as follows:

  • Ten (10) have subsequently now received their Class 3 certification and are fully accredited Referees with the ABSC.

  • Three (3) candidates are still to arrange their assessments owing to delays caused by personal circumstances.

  • Four (4) candidates decided not to proceed to the assessment stage.

Importantly, these workshops represent the first formalised and coordinated Referee training activity conducted by SBNSW in the Sydney area for many, many years.  On that basis alone, the steps taken to date by the Board and training facilitators can be regarded as successful and a sound platform upon which to build further.

With a proven Referee program now developed for use in NSW, it is vitally important to maintain this momentum.  Training workshops will continue to be planned and organised subject to the level of Expressions of Interest and enquiries received through the SBNSW website or by contacting the State Director of Referees.

Additional Referees are still required!
